Management Science

(1) Program Introduction

In an era of big data, the world is moving towards the direction of quantitative and meticulous management. The Management Science is science about improving the accuracy of decision-making and the efficiency of management through quantitative analysis. The core of this program is to reveal the rules behind the massive data in management process and to form the optimal decision using scientific methods. Students’ quantitative analysis ability, decision-making ability and management quality are emphasized in their training. This program owns 6 national research projects, 3 provincial and ministerial level educational programs, and a variety of applied projects commissioned by government departments, enterprises and institutions. It is one of the top programs in the School in terms of research achievements.

(2) Objectives

This program trains students to be experts in Mathematics, Applied Computer Science, Finance and Economics theories, Management Science, modeling, and tools. They are expected to be able to target practical problems in management process, especially in financial scenarios, to analyze qualitatively and quantitatively, make decisions, and implement them through advanced management concepts, methods and techniques, as well as mathematical and computer models. After graduation, our students are competent for careers in government, financial institutions, enterprises, teaching and scientific institutions and other related work. They are also academically prepared for further education.

(3)Programs and Key Modules

Our undergraduate program offers key modules in: Operations Research, Management Science Modeling and Application, Risk Management, Game Theory, Advanced Algebra, Mathematical Analysis, Probability Theory, Mathematical Statistics, Financial and Mathematical Methods, Multivariate Statistics and Data Mining, Econometrics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Management Principles, Investment Management, Financial Management, Basic Computer Science, C++, Database Theory and Application, Basic Law and other compulsory courses, as well as Finance, Management, Insurance and other optional courses.

Students enrolled in this program need to earn a certain number of credits to receive a bachelor’s degree in Management.

(4) Features and Advantages

The guideline of this program is “strong foundation, wide connectivity, and vital capacity”, which emphasizes math skills, hands-on experience, and problem-solving abilities. Previous students achieved great results in both the U.S. and National Mathematical Modeling Contest. Supervisors of this program are key module teachers, in order to encourage students to participate in their research for a higher level of publications, which has achieved outstanding results; and we signed an undergraduate exchange agreement with the Department of Management Science of the Hong Kong City University to provide learning opportunities for outstanding students.

(5) Employment and Further Education

Around 60% of graduates of this program seek further education both at home and abroad, including Northwestern University, Johns Hopkins University, George Washington University, Australia New Southwest Wales University, University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong, Tsinghua University, Peking University, etc. The majority of other students choose to work for banks, accounting firms, capital management companies and other financial institutions, various enterprises and government departments. In 2016, the contribution rate of employment of this program ranked No. 2 in the University.
