讲座摘要：Abstract: Intertemporal choices-decisions with consequences that play out over time-pervade our everyday life. Thus, how people form intertemporal preferences and make choices are fundamental questions in social sciences. Using a mouse-tracking experiment in which participants make intertemporal decisions under time constrains, we show that participants are heterogeneous in whether they are predisposed to impatience or patience. In particular, compared to the time-free condition, patient participants become more patient under time pressure and less patient under time delay, while impatient participants do the opposite. We quantitively decompose the attribute latency from other components in the process underlying intertemporal decisions via computational modeling. We find that the attribute latency explains individual differences in intertemporal preferences and predict how the preference changes across time conditions. In the second experiment, we manipulate the display order of the time and amount information to intervene participants’ attribute latencies, and the results show that this manipulation causally change participants’ intertemporal preferences. These findings highlight the importance of the intra-choice dynamics and deepen our understanding of the nature of intertemporal preferences.

陈发动，浙江大学管理学院“百人计划”研究员、博士生导师。主要从事行为决策、决策神经科学、行为与实验经济学等领域的教学与科研工作。先后获得浙江省哲学社会科学优秀成果二等奖、中国运筹学会行为运作管理分会优秀青年学者研究奖等。作为项目负责人，主持国家自然科学基金等多项科研项目。相关研究发表于《Nature Communications》、《Experimental Economics》等期刊，并得到国内外主流媒体的广泛报道。
